How I Got Into Yoga
I started practicing yoga 5 years ago to add some variety to my workout routine. I was getting bored of my usual cardio and strength training at the gym. Yoga seemed like an interesting new challenge. I also hoped it would help relieve the lower back pain I often felt after long days hunched over a computer.
I began with YouTube yoga for complete beginners. The first few sessions were humbling, to say the least! I could barely hold a plank for 30 seconds or keep my balance in tree pose. My hamstrings felt ready to rip just trying to grab my toes. Needless to say, I wasn’t very advanced in terms of flexibility or balance. However, I was instantly hooked by how the flowing movements synchronized with my breath made me feel calmer.
After practicing online for a month or so, I signed up for beginner classes at a nearby yoga studio. Having an instructor physically show me how to properly align my body was game-changing. I learned to engage my core and protect my lower back. My form improved quickly with their guidance. I was also motivated by practicing in a group setting.
Over the first 6 months, I steadily noticed improvements in my strength, balance, and mobility. I could touch my palms to the floor in a forward fold for the first time in my life! I noticed fewer aches and pains after long workdays too thanks to improved posture and core strength from yoga.
The Physical Benefits I Got from Yoga
Beyond those initial benefits during the beginner phase, yoga reshaped my body as I progressed to intermediate and advanced levels over several years. Here are some of the most noticeable physical changes it brought about:
Increased Flexibility
My hamstring, hip, and shoulder flexibility increased dramatically. I can now comfortably perform poses like pigeon pose and bound angle pose with no problem. My muscles and joints feel fluid and mobile rather than stiff and restricted.
Enhanced Athleticism
My balance, coordination, and agility all improved thanks to the precision and control that yoga demands. This boosted my performance in sports and recreational activities like hiking or skiing.
Core and Upper Body Strength
Holding plank pose and similar isometric exercises built incredible core power. Inverting my body in poses like downward dog and handstands led to stronger arms and shoulders. I finally managed a pull-up last year!
Better Posture and Alignment
My tendency to slouch drastically diminished thanks to yoga’s emphasis on proper spinal alignment. This has alleviated my back pain while improving posture. My body feels stacked efficiently.
Weight Loss
While not a fast-paced calorie burner, over time the physical activity of flowing yoga sequences helped me drop excess pounds, especially around my midsection. Muscle tone increased as well.
Injury Prevention
Building strength, balance, and flexibility have made me far less injury prone. My knees and wrists have much greater stability. Yoga has even helped alleviate old sports injuries in my ankle and shoulder through targeted poses and breathwork.
The Mental and Emotional Effects of Yoga
Even more than the physical changes, I’ve been blown away by how yoga makes me feel calmer, happier, and more focused. Here are some of the key mental benefits I continue to experience:
Decreased Stress and Anxiety
Yoga melts away both acute and chronic stress unlike anything else. The emphasis on mindful breathing is like a magic tonic, triggering relaxation even during demanding days. I’m much more resilient to stressors now.
Improved Sleep
Yoga has done wonders for my sleep issues. I fall asleep faster and stay asleep more soundly. Restorative yoga before bed is amazing. I no longer feel that 4am insomnia I used to regularly suffer from.
Greater Mind-Body Awareness
I feel much more in tune with my physical body now. Yoga increased my proprioception big time. I can quickly detect misalignments or injuries. I also have a greater sense of what my body needs day to day.
Boosted Mood and Confidence
Yoga combines meditative stillness with empowering movement. This leaves me feeling calm yet strong. I’m more optimistic and self-assured. Yoga grounds me in self-acceptance.
Focus and Mental Clarity My ability to concentrate and focus improved thanks to yoga’s meditative aspects. I can direct my mental energy rather than have my mind race haphazardly like it used to. Multitasking seems easier as well.
Yoga Lifestyle Habits
Beyond the poses themselves, yoga inspired me to adopt helpful lifestyle habits that further improved my well-being:
- Implementing breathing techniques during stressful situations
- Drinking more water and eating cleaner, less processed foods
- Prioritizing sleep and avoiding burnout
- Moving more mindfully throughout my day
- Journaling and meditating to calm my thoughts
- Listening better to my body’s needs rather than overriding them
The yoga community also connected me to tons of like-minded, health-conscious people. Their positive outlooks are contagious!
Getting Started with Yoga Yourself
Hopefully, my story gives you inspiration to try yoga for yourself and experience the incredible benefits! Here are my tips for getting started off right as a beginner:
- Look for “gentle”, “hatha” or “beginner” style classes that move at a comfortable pace. Avoid hot, power, or advanced-level classes at first.
- Explain it’s your first time to the instructor before class. They can provide extra guidance and modification options.
- Use props like blocks and straps to make poses more accessible. There’s no shame in props!
- Don’t push too far into any pose that causes sharp pain. Ease off and try a modified version.
- Be patient with yourself as you build strength, balance, and flexibility over time.
- Focus on linking breath with movement. The mental benefits start immediately.
- Stick with it! Consistency is key. Even 15-20 minutes a few times per week can pay off.
- Complement yoga with other healthy habits like proper nutrition, rest, and relaxation.
Let yoga awaken your body, mind, and spirit just as it did for me! I hope my story shows that yoga is for everyone. You don’t need to be super flexible or “hippy-dippy”. Give it an open-minded try and see the positive changes unfold. I’m so grateful I walked into my first yoga class. It truly transformed my health and life for the better. I know it can do the same for you!
